Biodegradable Pots for Seedlings: Toilet Roll Method

Recycle old toilet rolls to germinate seeds!

easy as growing from seed .inddGrowing from seed is a cost effective way of getting your garden started, plus it’s a lot of fun for children to see how something as small as a carrot seed grows into a tasty vegetable for the kitchen table!

Whilst you can purchase ‘seed raising trays‘ (which are very effective and great during colder months) recycling toilet rolls for seed germination is a great way to recycle household waste and being biodegradable, makes transplanting seedlings into the garden easier for little hands.

– Toilet rolls
– Seeds
– Searles Seed Raising Mix
– Plastic container (approx 30cm long)
– Children’s gloves
– Children’s garden tools
– Children’s watering can
– SeaMax® Fish & Kelp

Plant it!

1. Stack the empty toilet rolls into the plastic container, with open end facing up.

2. Fill each toilet roll with Searles Seed Raising Mix leaving 1cm from the top.

3. Use your finger to make a little hole in the centre of each toilet roll.

4. Carefully drop 1-3 seeds in each hole & recover with soil.

5. Water with SeaMax® Fish & Kelp, it’s ok to have water 1-2cm up the side of the toilet rolls. Check the water level every other day & water when required.

6. Once seedlings have reached a satisfactory size, transplant into the garden!

Happy gardening!
