How to make a moss pole for climbing plants

A moss pole provides support for climbing indoor plants such as Monstera, Philodendron, Pothos and Syngonium. It encourages plants to grow upright, develop larger leaves and produce stronger aerial roots by giving them a moist surface to cling to.

What You’ll Need to make a moss pole for climbing plants

• PVC-coated wire mesh or plastic-coated garden mesh

• Long-fibre sphagnum moss (pre-soaked in water)

• Cable ties or garden wire

• Bamboo cane, hardwood stake or PVC pipe for support

Step 1: Soak sphagnum moss in a bucket of water for 15–30 minutes. Squeeze out excess water so it is damp, not dripping.

Step 2: Roll the wire mesh into a cylinder approx. 5–10 cm in diameter and secure the seam with cable ties or garden wire.

Step 3: Pack the damp sphagnum moss firmly inside the mesh cylinder, ensuring there are no large gaps. The tighter the moss is packed, the longer the pole will retain moisture.

Step 4: Insert a sturdy bamboo cane or stake through the centre or attach it alongside the pole to provide strength. Secure it firmly so the pole remains stable in the pot.

Step 5: Place the moss pole deep into the pot, close to the base of your plant. Avoid damaging the main root system by inserting it carefully.

Step 6: Use soft plant ties or Velcro garden tape to gently attach stems to the pole. As aerial roots grow, they will naturally anchor themselves into the damp moss.

Ongoing Care for plants on moss poles

Mist the moss regularly or water it from the top to keep it moist. Check plant ties every few months and loosen them if necessary. Extend the pole as your plant grows taller.

Feed your climbing plant with a balanced liquid fertiliser, such as, Searles Flourish Indoor & Greening Soluble Plant Food during the growing season for healthy foliage.
