Make It! Sunflower Seed Gifts

Growing sunflowers is so much fun and what better way to share the enjoyment with friends and family than by creating your own Sunflower Seed Gifts. Great for Mother’s Day Gifts, party and wedding favours!

By Renee Nugent

I love growing Sunflowers in the garden, but have always wondered what I can do with the seeds once the flowers are spent (I don’t really require 200 Sunflowers in my suburban yard). The issue was resolved when my little girl asked if she could give some seeds to her friends to grow and I thought “What a great idea!”. Here is what we did:

– Sunflowers (or seeds if you haven’t grown your own plant)
-Cardboard tags
– Small plastic zip bags (mine from Office Works)
– Ribbon
– Stanley Knife

Make it!

1. When your sunflower starts to drop & lose it’s ‘cheerfulness’ thats when you can cultivate your seeds. Use a stanley knife or a kitchen knife to cut through the stem (scissors are far too small as the stem is usually very thick). Once complete, brush the dying yellow petals etc away, leaving just exposed seeds.

To make cultivating your sunflower seeds easier, pop the flower head in a large container & store away in a dry location for a week or two. When the flower head has dried out you can rip it into small pieces which makes the seed cultivation process much faster.

REMEMBER: birds and small mammals love sunflowers, so be sure to store in a safe location, otherwise all your lovely seeds will be LUNCH!

2. Picking your seeds. This is a great job for little gardeners! Children can spend hours picking sunflower seeds, my little girl sits for hours methodically picking the seeds and stashing them into a container.

3. Count your sunflower seeds out and place them into the plastic bags.

4. Add a little tag (growing instructions are helpful, check out How to Grow Cheerful Sunflowers) and some ribbon for colour. These gifts were for my little girls kindy friends for Christmas, so we went with a gold Christmas theme.

Other Gift & Favour Ideas

Seed gifts and favours are becoming very popular for weddings and birthday parties too. Here’s a few blog posts that I really love:

Great learning tool!

Occupational Therapist Nicole Grant from Gateway Therapies writes:

“This activity is great for encouraging fine motor development. It’s great to see opportunities to develop these skills in such a practical and fun way. Using a pincer grasp for removing the seeds is good for developing pre-writing skills.”

About Renee Nugent

Hi, I’m Renee and I’m a self confessed fun maker. Whilst I’m not the world’s best gardener (I’ve killed cactus), I believe that getting my kids gardening is one of the most important experiences I can give them as a parent. It’s my way to teach them about the environment, food production, healthy living, science and sustainable practices in a fun and physical way. I love that they are willing to taste our garden produce and that we incorporate many of our garden ‘treasures’ into our craft activities.

So don’t let past gardening failures burden you, we’ve all killed plants and that’s OK. Just get out there and garden with your kids, because….. well….. it’s fun πŸ™‚
